Jameela Jamil

Finally decided on my Fashion Promotion project! For my collaboration with Urban Outfitters I have chosen Jameela Jamil. I have just finished writing my piece on why I have decided she would be suitable for the collaboration, take a look;

"For my collaboration with high-street retail store Urban Outfitters I have chosen 23 year old TV Presenter/ Model Jameela Jamil, for which there are numerous reasons. One of the reasons being Jameela is within the age brackets of Urban Outfitters' target customer; meaning customers will find it easy to relate to not only Jameela, but the collaboration range too.
Jameela was born in London, UK and began her career teaching English to foreign students at the Callan School of English, Oxford Street, London. Whilst working at the Callan School of English she also worked as a model, photographer, and as a fashion scout for Premier Model Management Limited. Working as a model, photographer and model scout shows that Jameela has been heavily involved in the fashion industry for numerous years. This makes her suitable for a retail store collaboration due to her genuine interest in fashion and styling; she has a wide fan-base that would be attracted to a collaboration between her and the retail store Urban Outfitters. By already having a wide fan-base this gives me confidence that if she was to collaborate with Urban Outfitters, there would already be a lot of interest and excitement surrounding the event, without having to do a lot of promotional work.
In January 2009, Alexa Chung left the morning TV show 'Freshly Squeezed' that is featured on Channel 4's E4. Jameel took over as the co-host along with Nick Grimshaw. Jamil has also presented other E4 Music programmes, which entails interviewing celebrities on a weekly basis. She also presented the music festival T4 on the beach two years running. As well as numerous presenting gigs, Jameela also has her own show on BBC Radio 1, which would provide prime opportunities when promoting the collaboration.
 Jamil presented "The Closet", an online fashion advice show on the social networking site Bebo. Created and produced by Twenty Twenty Television, it formed part of the 'Bebo Originals' commission programme. The weekly shows began on 25 August 2009, running for just over four months, featuring fashion and makeup guides, insider interviews and celebrity gossip. Site visitors could participate in the show via the site, uploading photos of their ‘best buys’ of the week and voting in polls.

Jamil has featured in several magazines, she was photographed for a Vogue feature on 'British Editorial Class of 2010', featured in an editorial entitled 'How to impress Jameela Jamil' in the British edition of Esquire, and also had a shoot in InSyle Magazine. Jamil also has written a column for Company, the women’s monthly magazine. The fact that Jameela already has featured in magazines such as Company and Vogue show that she is familiar with taking part in editorial work, which would be helpful during the promotion aspects of the collaboration. It also shows that readers of these magazines may also be familiar with her name, image and her style. These magazines also regularly feature clothing from Urban Outfitters.
She started becoming noticed in the fashion industry in 2010 when she was reported as a “rising star in the fashion world, carving out her own niche in feminine grunge glam outfits”. Jamil does not have a stylist, as she chooses her own clothes from fashion designers including Olivia Rubin, D&G, Henry Holland, Urban Outfitters, Office, and high-street brand Topshop.
Her style has been described as “unique looks that both reflect and inspire the UK's young, fresh fashionistas”. She is fond of 1950s and 60s vintage dresses, styled after icons Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot.
Jamil has attended events such as London Fashion Week which shows she has a strong interest in trends and fashion. Jameela is noted for her unique style and quirky sense of humour, and is frequently praised for her natural beauty. I feel this will help customers to relate to her, I also feel her style and characteristics reflect the brand identity of Urban Outfitters well; Urban outfitters focus on funky fashion and the product line has evolved from vintage, retro, ironically humorous, apparel. They are known for catering to 'hipster' culture and fashion, which incorporates an influence from past decades, this kind of style is reflected throughout Jameela's own personal style, showing that she would fit in very well with the already established strong brand identity of Urban Outfitters. It is important to make sure that celebrity collaborations with high-street retailers stay true to the style of garments previously and currently sold in the chosen store that they are collaborating with; as the clothes should portray the brand identity. This helps ensure that the collaboration will be popular and of interest to the customers already shopping in store. But by choosing a collaborator (such as Jameela) that is slightly different, and unique to the brand, this will also help attract more customers, thus expanding their target customer.
Jamil has already collaborated with the popular online retail store www.very.co.uk, on which she commented, “I'm so excited to be launching my first collection, I've tried to think about what I want from clothes and how they fit, and I've had a lot of fun making you some great pieces”. The 49 piece range was very popular. Due to the target market of Urban Outfitters, I feel, by Jameela collaborating with the brand, the range would be even more popular than her range for Very, due to Urban Outfitters having a younger target market/ I think this because Jamil is of a closer age to their average customer, this enables the range to be more adventurous and would also fit the brand identity of Urban Outfitters very well, in comparison to Very.
Jameela is an advocate for the promotion of women appreciating their own beauty regardless of their body shape. Jameela's advise for women who struggle with how they look; “The most important thing is comfort. Don't force yourself to wear something that's two sizes too small. Wear something in the right size and that you feel good in. If your uncomfortable, it doesn't matter how stunning you are, you won't look attractive. If your comfortable you feel better and you project a better energy”. I feel this is a very important factor for Jameela collaborating with Urban Outfitters as it provides a positive message for both their brand and customer."

Please let me know what you think! :)

Penabranca

Penabranca (Bruno)is a 30 year old artist from Brazil, Sao Paulo.
His digitally created graphic art have a very earthy, organic feel to them and I love the patterns he layers over them. I could definitely invision his art work being popular with Urban Outfitters customers; the collaboration range could feature graphic print tee's and panelled bodycon dresses, as well as printing his art work onto chiffon/ organza fabrics to create, feminine, visually exciting layers within maxi skirts/ dresses.
Below are some of my favourite pieces of art work, let me know what you think!

"Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence."

Not only does Bruno create artwork, he also creates music in a band named 'Camel Heads' which he designes the album artwork for (naturally), have a cheeky listen!! :)

http://camelheads.bandcamp.com/
"Camel Heads are a spaced out slow motion psych outfit from Sao Paulo, Brazil. They make spacious guitar based tropical drones and jam the granny out of them. Somewhere between sun drenched Sun Araw psych and epic stoner Sleep dopesmoking rock."
(Homeless Mind Theory)
"From Sao Paulo, Brazil, comes a spaciously delicious, ambient-tinged psychedelic guitar badassery of Camel Heads, which offers us a healthy dose of dead man’s desert blues filtered through the prism early Sun Araw-like tropical psychedelia, back when Cameron Stallones was pumping out rolling-fog, drumless lysergic gems. Camel Heads sounds like a series of slow buildups for epic stoner jams."

Nasty Gal NYE look book

It's official, I'm developing a sick obsession with the clothing website Nasty Gal, I've just seen the new images for the NYE look book and I'm genuinely in love with 99% of the garments on display.
ROLL ON CHRISTMAS SALES!!

New college project; Fashion Promotion

Project Brief:

"Following on from your previous projects, Fashion retail & Fashion Buying, you will build upon your knew-found knowledge by generating and developing a concept for an existing retailer. This will be created through collaborating with a new designer or celebrity.
Your concept will be presented and promoted via a double-page magazine spread for Grazia. This should be branded with your collection name, logo, examples of the product, and a written piece promoting the new range."

When I first recieved this project I knew straight away I was going to love it! So far key research has been completed in the form of brand analysis and creating a group presentation on our chosen store (Urban Outfitters).
Our presentation contained research on these key factors;
  • Core Customer (which was developed through market research using methods such as questionnaires)
  • Product and Ranges (this involved studying the current products and ranges that are currently sold in store)
  • Competitors (realising our stores key competitors, which consisted of mid-range market level stores such as Topshop, and also local vintage stores, due to there being an Urban Outiftters renewal concession stall in the Newcastle branch)
  • Logo/ Promotional material (we collected various imagery of Urban Outiftters' logos as well as researching into promotional tactics that Urban Outfitters use, this involved a lot of social networking techniques, using sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Pinterest, Instagram and OUTV)
  • SWOT Analysis (during this part of the presentation areas of the business were highlighted, consisting of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This section was important for us to fully understand the brand that we are planning a collaboration for)
  • Areas/ ideas for Expansion (we decided that Urban Outfitter could consider launching a children's range, seeing as they are quite a lifestyle oriented brand, selling everything from clothes and homeware to music and skateboards)
The group I was in presented last Friday and out brand analysis report went very well! *cough* JENNA *cough*
Now we have to work individually to decide on a final collaboration that will be suitable for the brand. Once this has been deciced on a brand logo must be developed in time to incorporate into the mock magazine spread for Grazia magazine.
Tonight I will be researching into celebraties, artists and designers that could possibly be suitable for a collaboration with Urban Outiftters. I will post my ideas and keep you all updated! EEk! :)

ladies day 2012!

So, I haven't posted on here for literally months, but this time I'm starting fresh and promise myself I'm going to commit to it.
My post is going to be about ladies day which occured at the Gosforth racecourse on Saturday, literally do not know where to start.
My friend Holly accompanied me on the day, there's a little photo of us below. Usually I'm more organized with my outfits for going to special events but this year I was definitely less organized than usual. Hopefully I still looked presentable and lady-like! Overall we ended up having such a lovely day, even if copious amounts of Pimms was consumed.

American Apparel Ads Banned

Basically;I'm finding it hard to believe how this ridiculous it is that this 'scandal' has even occurred; with all the other 'offensive' crap that goes on in the alternative fields of media that are out there such as; chart music, television and celebrities. IT'S JUST A HUMAN BODY. People need to get over it, after all, if it was a swanky painting that had been produced showing body parts everyone would be lapping it up going on a about how 'creative' and 'devine' it is. As soon as it's something fresh and cheeky [what a naughty little pun] people start ranting and raving how 'innaporpriate' it is. At the end of the day the controversial ads have still succeeded in promoting and getting people talking about the brand [American Apparel] so all I can say is KUDOS to the photographer/ creative director/ stylists that worked on the shoot!
Shown below is the article that I found on http://www.huhmagazine.co.uk/ which sparked my little 'rant'.

"American Apparel are certainly known for their provocative adverts, but apparently they've taken it too far with the "nude buttocks" in their latest series of eight ads. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority say they are too exploitative and pornographic.

"We considered that in the particular context of images which featured nudity and sexually provocative poses, there was a voyeuristic and 'amateurish' quality to the images which served to heighten the impression that the ads were exploitative of women and inappropriately sexualized young women."

In retaliation, AA said it was "important to judge what was and was not offensive by reference to the current times and the views of the majority of decent and reasonable people, not a small and puritanically-minded minority." They also defended their choice to use "real women" rather than models in their shoot, stating that consumers can relate to these types of photographs and that the women were "happy, relaxed, and confident in expression and pose."
The final decision taken was that 7 of the 8 ads will not be allowed to run again, and American Apparel have been warned not to produce similar ads in the future. "

As always though, everyone is entitled to their own oppinion.

little update

Just realised I haven't posted in a few days so I thought I'd give you all a little update on what has been crack-a-lackin'!
The other day I finally bought a camo army jacket I have been wanting for ages from Urban Outfitters which is shown below;

I also decided this jacket would be perfect for my red hot chili peppers [such a good band] patch so I had a cheeky little sewing session and sewed it onto the sleeve!

I also treat myself to a tie dye V neck t-shirt whilst in Urban Outfitters! [apologies for the black speckles on the photo, the front camera on my phone has the worlds worst sensor]!

 [earrings also from urban outfitters]
